The
Sollershott Circus roundabout in Letchworth is famous as the first 'intersection
for gyratory movement' (or roundabout as it later became known) in Britain.
It was constructed in 1910 at the southern end of Broadway as part of the
Garden City design. However, for the first twenty years after it was built
there wasn't any indication as to which was the right way to go round, although
there are no records of any accidents. The roundabout is part of the Grade
II registered park and gardens at Letchworth and is therefore a protected
