The First Roundabout in Britain

The Sollershott Circus roundabout in Letchworth is famous as the first 'intersection for gyratory movement' (or roundabout as it later became known) in Britain. It was constructed in 1910 at the southern end of Broadway as part of the Garden City design. However, for the first twenty years after it was built there wasn't any indication as to which was the right way to go round, although there are no records of any accidents. The roundabout is part of the Grade II registered park and gardens at Letchworth and is therefore a protected monument. For more information about Letchworth Garden City
